Samurai Spirit Tour in Fukushima |
Samurai Spirit Tour is something Fukushima prefecture is promoting to tell the world that they are doing fine and well and Fukushima is safe to visit.
My students and I were in Japan at the right time! We could participated in that tour! To explain the experience during this two nights and three days tour, I need to write a report. So I will explain briefly. Fukushima is famous
for the tragedy of Byakkotai, a fighting unit mainly consisted of young people.
The tour was going around the places that are related to the Byakkotai and learning about their bushido. And it was led by Alex Bennett sensei (picture).
We visited a local bogu shop, castles, Nisshinkan (samurai school built exactly as it was) and dojos. Also a katana polisher demonstrated how he polishes katana right in front of us. We also stayed at beautiful hotels with great food!
Needless to say, we did kendo at 3 dojos, Fukushima Butokuden, Nisshinkan and Nihonmatsu Kenyukai. At Butokuden and Nihonmatsu Kenyukai we trained with the local kendoists from kids to adults. And at Nisshinkan we did keiko among the tour participants.
